PORON® Cushioning Presents to Future Designers at FIT

FITOne of the most rewarding aspects of being a PORON® Cushioning Sales Engineer is helping product developers with their design challenges. It is such a great feeling to see the wheels turn and experience their ‘ah ha’ moments after a demonstration of our materials and how they can be applied.

So, it was a real treat to be invited by Sarah Mullins, chairperson of Fashion Institute of Technology’s (FIT) Accessories Design Department, to present a class on the usage of foams in apparel and equipment.

About 50 students and faculty members this interactive session where I encouraged them to touch and feel the products so it cements their experience. We talked a bit open cell vs. closed cell foam and then its various characteristics such as density, compression force deflection (CFD), hardness, compression set resistance, resilience, tensile strength, tensile elongation, and antimicrobial treatment.

Our discussion continued with how to select the most appropriate foam and how it is best incorporated for specific end uses.  For instance a hockey helmet facing slap shot puck speeds up to 100mph would need a different foam formulation than an athletic shoe.  Who knew there was so much about foam to talk about?!

We look forward to seeing these young and creative designers’ products, hopefully with PORON Materials, in the market soon!
