Q&A with Elizabeth Simon, Rogers PORON® Cushioning Sales Engineer – West Coast USA
Although her “official” territory is West Coast USA, Elizabeth’s expertise in technical materials for outdoor/athletic equipment, apparel and footwear is utilized throughout Rogers’ global regions. Simply walk a trade show with her and you’ll only begin to get a glimpse of the amount of history and knowledge Elizabeth shares with the people, products and brands within the Outdoor Industry.
So to continue our “A Look Inside Rogers” blog series, Elizabeth shared a little more about herself and her work with PORON® Cushioning.
Q: Can you give us a brief description about your background and how you came to work with the PORON® Cushioning Team?
A: I have been in component sales to the Outdoor Industry since 1995. In 2006 I joined the PORON® Cushioning Team at Rogers Corporation. The team has changed a great deal in the last 5 years. We have grown into a team willing to take on new market segments.
Q: What areas of expertise do you bring to customer meetings?
A: I try to provide solutions for customers needs. I really do understand footwear construction and am learning about various protective apparel sporting good equipment needs every day.
Q: Can you talk about a specific application or market which has sparked your interest lately?
A: There are so many it is really hard to choose. The diversity from work gloves, to western boots to shin guards and Police shields. It is so interesting and valuable to learn about how cushioning and impact protection play in all of these markets. It’s wonderful to be able to work with so many different brands in such varied applications. It makes every day interesting.
Q: What are the biggest trends or changes that you are seeing in the markets you serve?
A: The Holy Grail is lighter, more durable and value priced. Then it varies by market segment:
– Added protection
– Additional comfort
– Temperature regulating
– Puncture and slash
Q: You’re certainly no stranger to Outdoor Retailer, is there something in particular you look forward to each OR?
A: Outdoor Retailer is a great show. It is wonderful that they support the components industry with the Design Center
Q: What other trade shows and conferences will you be attending throughout the year?
Q: The Rogers team knows how active you are with other organizations and associations, can you talk about some of the additional projects you’re also involved in?
A: I am the Chairperson of ChooseOutdoors.org Our mission is to promote outdoor recreation and active lifestyles through support for public lands and waters, recreation infrastructure and programs connecting Americans to the outdoors. Next year is a very exciting year for us as we are a sponsor of the Capitol 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree which will come from Colorado’s White River National Forest and will stand in front of the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC. I am also an active member of the OIWC.
Q: The Rogers Sales Members are known for their traveling to various customers on a weekly basis…have any travel tips you want to share with customers?
A: Pack snacks and patience…..this too shall pass.
Q: Any other tidbits of information you’d like to share with readers?
A: Have fun – get outside – play a little everyday.
